From the Local to the Global

Abstrak

Art and culture are two inseparable domains embedded in the dynamics of social life. In the context of globalization, the relationship between art and culture has become increasingly complex due to human mobility, technological advancement, and intensified cross-cultural exchanges. This article examines how various forms of artistic expression including performing arts, visual arts, music, literature, media arts, and digital arts interact with local, popular, global, subaltern, hybrid, and transnational cultural dynamics. Rather than viewing art merely as an aesthetic object, this study positions it as a social practice deeply intertwined with power relations, identity formation, historical contexts, and cultural economies. Employing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates cultural studies, sociology of art, anthropology, and media studies, this article demonstrates that art does not simply reflect social reality but actively shapes how societies understand identity, space, and intercultural relations. The metaphor of the “mosaic” is used to describe the diversity of global arts and cultures as composed of distinct yet interconnected fragments within a global network. The study argues that globalization does not solely produce cultural homogenization; rather, it also creates spaces for dialogue, creativity, and negotiation of meaning between the local and the global.
